Chennai, India — April 19, 2026
In a fresh setback for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), young batter Ayush Mhatre is facing a potential spell on the sidelines after suffering a suspected hamstring tear during a recent IPL clash, adding to the team’s growing injury concerns.
Batting coach Mike Hussey confirmed that the severity of the injury is yet to be determined, with medical scans expected to provide clarity soon.
Hussey Confirms Hamstring Injury
Speaking after the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Hussey revealed that Mhatre experienced a hamstring issue while batting.
He indicated that the injury “looks quite serious,” though the exact extent will only be confirmed after further medical evaluation. The uncertainty has raised concerns about the youngster’s availability for the remainder of the season.
Blow After Khaleel Ahmed Exit
The development comes shortly after CSK lost fast bowler Khaleel Ahmed to injury, further weakening the squad.
Mhatre’s potential absence could be another significant blow, especially considering his recent form and impact at the top of the order.
Promising Knock Cut Short
Ayush Mhatre, just 18, impressed during the match with a quickfire 30 off 13 balls after coming in as an impact substitute.
However, his innings was cut short when he suffered the injury while attempting a second run. Despite visible discomfort, he continued briefly before being dismissed.
CSK Injury List Growing
Mhatre is the latest addition to CSK’s injury list, which already includes:
- Khaleel Ahmed (ruled out)
- Nathan Ellis (injured)
- MS Dhoni (recovering from a calf injury, yet to play this season)
The mounting injuries have disrupted team combinations and impacted consistency.
Season Struggles Continue
CSK suffered a 10-run defeat in the match, marking another setback in what has been a challenging campaign. The team has now registered multiple losses and currently sits in the lower half of the points table.
With crucial matches ahead, CSK’s chances may depend heavily on player fitness and squad depth.
