Rare Astrological Alignment Creates Confusion Over Chaitra Navratri 2026

A rare astrological alignment is set to mark the beginning of Chaitra Navratri and the Hindu New Year (Vikram Samvat 2083) in 2026, leading to confusion among devotees regarding the correct date and timing for Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana).

According to astrologer Pandit Ajay Kaushik, this unusual celestial combination is occurring after several centuries and has created complexities in the traditional Hindu Panchang calculations.

Vikram Samvat 2083 to Begin on March 19, 2026

Pandit Ajay Kaushik explained that Vikram Samvat 2082 will conclude and Vikram Samvat 2083 will begin on Thursday, March 19, 2026. The same day will also mark the start of Chaitra Navratri, the nine-day festival dedicated to Goddess Durga.

However, the situation becomes unusual because the first lunar day (Chaitra Shukla Pratipada) is experiencing “tithi kshaya”, meaning the first date of the lunar calendar is reduced or skipped.

While such increases or decreases in lunar dates sometimes occur during Navratri, it is rare for the first day of the new Vikram Samvat to experience this phenomenon.

Why Is There Confusion About Ghatasthapana?

The confusion arises because the Amavasya (new moon) tithi of Chaitra month will remain until 6:52 AM on March 19.

Meanwhile, sunrise on March 19 will occur at 5:52 AM. According to traditional Hindu calendar rules, the tithi present at sunrise is considered valid for the entire day.

Since Amavasya will still be in effect at sunrise, the new lunar date will technically begin only after 6:52 AM.

This rare timing difference has created uncertainty among devotees about whether Ghatasthapana should be performed on Pratipada or Dwitiya.

Astrologer Clarifies the Correct Ghatasthapana Timing

Speaking to INVC News, Pandit Ajay Kaushik clarified that the first Navratri fast of Chaitra Shukla Paksha will begin after 6:52 AM on March 19, 2026.

Therefore, Ghatasthapana (Kalash installation) should also be performed after 6:52 AM on March 19.

According to the astrologer, performing the ritual after this time ensures that devotees receive the complete spiritual benefits of the Navratri observance.

He further explained that the second day of Navratri (Dwitiya) will be observed on March 20, when devotees will perform the second day’s worship.

Significance of the Rare Panchang Event

Astrologers say such rare combinations in the Hindu lunar calendar occur only after many centuries. The unusual alignment of Amavasya timing, sunrise, and the start of the new Vikram Samvat has made this year’s Navratri particularly unique.

For devotees, the key takeaway is that the festival officially begins on March 19 after 6:52 AM, when the new lunar cycle begins.

This timing will mark the start of Chaitra Navratri, the Hindu New Year, and the traditional Ghatasthapana ritual.
