NEW DELHI, India — June 27, 2026
India Weather Update: Weather conditions across India remain highly dynamic, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting a mix of rising temperatures, widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and flood risks in several regions. While northwestern states are expected to experience a gradual increase in daytime temperatures over the next two days, eastern, northeastern and southern India continue to face heavy rainfall, strong winds and localized flooding as the southwest monsoon advances further across the country.
The IMD said maximum temperatures across northwestern India could rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius through June 28, even as isolated thunderstorms and light rain remain possible in several states. Authorities have also urged residents and farmers to stay alert amid forecasts of gusty winds, lightning and heavy downpours in vulnerable regions.
Northwest India to See Warmer Days Alongside Thunderstorms
According to the latest IMD forecast, parts of Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and western Rajasthan may experience light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms over the coming days.
Wind speeds are expected to range between 25 and 30 mph (40–50 km/h) across many of these areas. In eastern Rajasthan, gusts could reach 37 mph (60 km/h), increasing the risk of falling trees, minor structural damage and temporary disruptions to transportation and daily life.
Although temperatures are forecast to climb, intermittent rain and cloud cover may provide temporary relief in some locations.
Heavy Rain Continues Across Eastern, Central and Southern India
The weather remains highly active across eastern and central India.
The IMD has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall over Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, eastern Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Kerala, Lakshadweep and parts of West Bengal are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by strong winds.
Meteorologists continue to monitor the evolving weather system as moisture associated with the advancing southwest monsoon fuels widespread precipitation across large sections of the country.
Himachal Pradesh Faces Extended Spell of Rain
In the northern hill state of Himachal Pradesh, Shimla and surrounding areas experienced intermittent heavy rain and strong winds.
Mashobra recorded the highest rainfall at 35 millimeters, according to weather officials.
The IMD has forecast continued rainfall across the state over the next six days, with heavy rainfall warnings issued for July 1 and July 2, raising concerns about landslides, flash flooding and travel disruptions in vulnerable mountain districts.
Southwest Monsoon Advances Further Across India
The southwest monsoon continues to expand steadily across the country.
The IMD said the northern limit of the monsoon now stretches from the Arabian Sea through Surat, Indore, Mandla, Daltonganj and Motihari.
Weather conditions are expected to remain favorable for the monsoon to advance into additional parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand over the next three to four days.
The continued advance is expected to improve soil moisture, accelerate sowing of kharif crops and bring additional relief from the intense summer heat across several regions.
Lightning Claims Four Lives
Despite the benefits of monsoon rainfall, severe weather has also led to tragic incidents.
In Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district, two young men were killed after being struck by lightning while playing football.
In a separate incident in Odisha’s Boudh district, two teenage boys reportedly sought shelter beneath a tree during a rainstorm but were fatally struck by lightning.
Authorities continue to urge residents to avoid open fields, isolated trees and utility poles during thunderstorms.
Flood Rescue Operations Continue in Arunachal Pradesh
Flooding has caused widespread disruption in Arunachal Pradesh’s Keyi Panyor district, where rescue operations remain underway following a sudden surge of floodwaters.
Officials said one woman has died, while four people remain missing.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), district police and local volunteers are conducting coordinated search and rescue operations. Floodwaters have also disrupted transportation links, temporarily isolating parts of the district from the rest of the state.
IMD Issues Advisory for Farmers and Residents
The IMD has advised farmers in rain-affected areas to ensure proper drainage from agricultural fields, complete harvesting of mature crops wherever possible and postpone the application of fertilizers and pesticides until weather conditions improve.
Residents have also been urged to monitor official weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather, stay away from trees, electric poles and open spaces during thunderstorms, and follow instructions issued by local authorities.
With the southwest monsoon continuing its advance, weather experts say changing conditions are likely to persist across much of India over the coming days, requiring close attention to regional forecasts and safety advisories.
