Somnath Temple Prepares for Historic Amrit Parva Ceremony as PM Modi Joins Grand Spiritual Event

SOMNATH, Gujarat — May 11, 2026

The iconic Somnath Temple in Gujarat is set to witness a historic spiritual milestone as preparations for the grand Somnath Amrit Parva 2026 celebrations enter the final stage.

For the first time in the temple’s modern history, a special Kumbhabhishek ritual will be performed atop the temple’s towering shikhar using sacred water collected from 11 revered pilgrimage sites across India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the ceremony on Monday along with senior Gujarat government officials and thousands of devotees from India and abroad.

The event marks the 75th anniversary of the inauguration of the reconstructed Somnath Temple and is being celebrated as a major blend of faith, heritage, engineering and cultural tradition.

Massive Sacred Kalash Prepared for Temple Ritual

A specially designed ceremonial kalash measuring nearly eight feet in height has been created for the grand ritual.

Officials said the structure has a storage capacity of approximately 1,100 liters and a total weight of nearly 1,860 kilograms, including the kalash itself weighing around 760 kilograms.

Temple authorities described the structure as a remarkable example of modern engineering integrated with ancient religious traditions.

The massive kalash will be carefully lifted to the temple summit using a 90-meter crane equipped with advanced remote-control and sensor technology. Officials said the installation process at the top of the temple is expected to take just three minutes.

Sacred Ritual to Blend Tradition and Technology

During the Kumbhabhishek ceremony, sacred water from 11 holy pilgrimage sites will be poured over the temple shikhar amid Vedic chants, conch shell sounds and temple bells.

Religious leaders and organizers said the ceremony symbolizes a rare confluence of spirituality, science and centuries-old Hindu traditions.

The ritual is commonly associated with South Indian temple traditions, where such consecration ceremonies are conducted every 10 to 12 years. However, this will be the first time such a shikhar Kumbhabhishek is being organized at Somnath Temple, significantly enhancing the event’s spiritual and historical significance.

PM Modi, Gujarat Leaders and Thousands of Devotees to Attend

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in several key religious and cultural programs during the celebrations.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi are also expected to attend the event.

Ahead of the ceremony, a full-scale rehearsal of the Kumbhabhishek was conducted in the presence of senior state officials.

Thousands of devotees from across India and overseas have already started arriving in Somnath to witness the landmark occasion.

The temple complex has been extensively decorated with flowers and lighting arrangements, while security agencies have deployed additional personnel in and around the temple premises to ensure smooth conduct of the event.

Commemorative Stamp and Coin to Be Released

As part of the 75-year celebrations, Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to release a commemorative postage stamp and special coin dedicated to Somnath Temple’s spiritual and cultural legacy.

The Prime Minister will additionally participate in a special Maha Puja and the ceremonial flag hoisting event associated with the temple consecration rituals.

Officials said the Amrit Parva celebrations are designed not only as a religious gathering but also as a tribute to India’s civilizational heritage and enduring spiritual traditions.
