A high-stakes diplomatic meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping is expected to take place next week, with the Taiwan issue emerging as one of the most sensitive and closely watched topics on the agenda.
According to Marco Rubio, the US President is scheduled to visit Beijing on May 14 and 15 for his first official trip to China since beginning his second term in office.
The summit is expected to shape the future direction of US-China relations at a time of rising geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, and growing strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific region.
Taiwan Expected to Dominate Discussions
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that Taiwan will be a central issue during the upcoming talks.
Rubio stated that the United States does not support instability in the region and remains focused on preserving peace across the Taiwan Strait.
Meanwhile, China has intensified its rhetoric ahead of the summit, warning that Taiwan remains the country’s “most sensitive” national issue.
Chinese President Xi Jinping recently described Taiwan’s eventual reunification with mainland China as “inevitable,” signaling Beijing’s increasingly firm position on the matter.

The previous Trump-Xi meeting in Busan, South Korea, in October 2025 focused heavily on tariffs and trade disputes, while the Taiwan issue received limited public attention.

The summit could also include discussions on fentanyl trafficking, with Trump expected to push China to strengthen controls on chemical supplies linked to the production of the drug.
Washington has repeatedly accused Chinese suppliers of contributing to the global fentanyl crisis through precursor chemical exports.
In addition, the United States is expected to encourage China to use its influence over Iran to help reduce tensions in the Middle East.
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine and broader global security concerns may also be part of the strategic dialogue between the two leaders.
