New Delhi, India — May 4, 2026
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Monday reached out to key regional leaders following the announcement of election results across five states, signaling ongoing political coordination within opposition ranks.
According to Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, Gandhi held phone conversations with Mamata Banerjee, M. K. Stalin, and Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay, discussing the outcomes and political developments in their respective states.
Outreach to Regional Allies and Leaders
Ramesh shared details of the conversations on social media platform X, noting that Gandhi congratulated Vijay for the performance of his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), in Tamil Nadu. The results in the southern state saw the ruling DMK face a fresh political challenge from the emerging regional force.
In West Bengal, where the All India Trinamool Congress faced electoral setbacks against the BJP, Gandhi also spoke with Banerjee to review the outcome. Meanwhile, the Congress contested independently in the state, marking a different strategic approach compared to its alliance in Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu and West Bengal: Shifting Political Dynamics
Tamil Nadu witnessed a competitive political landscape, with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) encountering pressure from TVK’s growing presence. Congress remained part of the DMK-led alliance in the state.
In contrast, West Bengal saw a direct contest involving multiple parties, including Congress and the BJP, leading to a significant shift in electoral outcomes.
Rahul Gandhi Thanks Kerala Voters for UDF Victory
Separately, Gandhi expressed gratitude to voters in Kerala after the United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a decisive mandate in the state.
In a message shared on social media, he thanked the people of Kerala for what he described as a “clear and decisive verdict.”
“I extend my heartfelt thanks to my brothers and sisters of Kerala for delivering a strong mandate. Congratulations to every UDF leader and worker for a disciplined and determined campaign,” Gandhi said.
Focus on Governance and Future Vision
Gandhi emphasized that Kerala possesses immense talent and potential, adding that the incoming UDF government would work with a renewed vision for development and governance.
He also expressed his intention to visit the state soon, signaling continued engagement with party workers and constituents on the ground.
