New Delhi, India — May 2, 2026
India is rapidly establishing itself as a leading global destination for medical value travel (MVT), with government data indicating strong growth prospects driven by affordability, quality care, and integrated healthcare systems.
According to official estimates, India’s medical tourism market is projected to grow from $8.7 billion in 2025 to $16.2 billion by 2030, nearly doubling within five years. Globally, the MVT market—valued at $115.6 billion in 2022—is expected to expand to $286.1 billion by 2030, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 10.8%.
AYUSH Visa and Policy Push Fuel Growth
Government officials attribute this growth to a combination of advanced medical infrastructure and traditional wellness systems supported by initiatives like the AYUSH visa.
The Ministry of AYUSH has played a key role in promoting holistic healthcare offerings, including yoga, Ayurveda, and wellness therapies, alongside modern clinical treatments.
Factors driving inbound medical travel include:
- Rising healthcare costs globally
- Long waiting periods in developed countries
- Increasing prevalence of lifestyle-related diseases
India’s integrated approach—combining curative treatments with preventive wellness—has positioned it as a competitive alternative for international patients.
Medical + Wellness Tourism: Dual Growth Engines
India’s MVT ecosystem operates on two major pillars:
- Medical Tourism: Advanced treatments, surgeries, and specialized care
- Wellness Tourism: Preventive healthcare through Ayurveda, yoga, and holistic therapies
This dual model enables India to cater to both critical medical needs and growing global demand for wellness-focused travel.
Foreign Patient Inflow: Key Source Countries
Government data shows that in 2025, India recorded over 507,000 medical tourists, accounting for approximately 5.5% of total foreign tourist arrivals.
Top source countries included:
- Bangladesh – 325,127 arrivals
- Iraq – 30,989
- Uzbekistan – 13,699
- Somalia – 11,506
- Turkmenistan – 10,231
- Oman – 9,738
- Kenya – 9,357
The figures highlight India’s strong appeal across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
India’s Global Ranking and Quality Standards
According to the Medical Tourism Index 2020–21, India ranks:
- 10th globally among top 46 medical tourism destinations
- 5th in Asia-Pacific for wellness tourism
The country’s healthcare system is supported by internationally recognized accreditation standards through bodies like the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers, which ensures strict quality and patient safety protocols.
Future Roadmap: Regional Medical Hubs Planned
Looking ahead, the government has proposed the development of five regional medical centers under the Union Budget 2026–27. These centers will integrate:
- Medical treatment facilities
- Education and research infrastructure
- Dedicated AYUSH wellness centers
The initiative aims to strengthen India’s position as a global healthcare destination while improving domestic medical capacity.
Outlook: India’s Rising Global Healthcare Influence
With a combination of affordability, advanced medical expertise, and traditional wellness systems, India is steadily expanding its footprint in the global medical tourism market.
As demand for accessible and holistic healthcare grows worldwide, the country is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of medical value travel.
