As voting for the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 gains momentum, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on citizens to turn out in record numbers, emphasizing the critical role of public participation in strengthening democracy.
With months of intense campaigning, sharp political exchanges, and strategic maneuvering behind them, the electoral battle in West Bengal has entered a decisive phase. As voters head to polling booths, the focus has now shifted from rhetoric to public mandate—where every vote carries the potential to shape the state’s political future.
In a message posted on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi described the second phase of polling as “crucial for democracy” and urged voters to actively participate. “I appeal to all voters to cast their votes in record numbers and further strengthen democracy,” he said.
Focus on Women and Youth Voters
The Prime Minister made a targeted appeal to women and young voters, highlighting their vital role in shaping a vibrant and participatory democratic system. According to PM Modi, increased participation from these groups would make democracy “more dynamic and impactful.”
He further emphasized that voting is not just a right but a civic responsibility. “As aware citizens, it is our duty to ensure maximum participation in the electoral process,” he noted in another message.
PM Modi also linked higher voter turnout with broader national progress, stating that active citizen engagement strengthens not only democratic institutions but also contributes to the country’s development and rebuilding efforts.
Phase 2 Voting: High Stakes Across 142 Seats
The second phase of polling in West Bengal is being conducted across 142 विधानसभा seats, with voters deciding the fate of 1,448 candidates. The scale and intensity of this phase underline its importance in determining the overall electoral outcome.
The contest remains highly competitive. The ruling Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, is aiming for a fourth consecutive term in power. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party is making an aggressive push to secure its first electoral victory in the state.
As polling continues, all eyes remain on voter turnout figures, which are expected to play a decisive role in shaping the final outcome of one of India’s most closely watched state elections.
