Google’s $15 billion AI data center project in Vizag to boost India’s global tech leadership

Visakhapatnam, India — April 28, 2026

India has taken a major leap in its digital transformation journey with the announcement of a $15 billion AI data center project led by Google in Visakhapatnam, positioning the coastal city as a future global hub for artificial intelligence.

The foundation stone for the ambitious Google Cloud India AI Data Center was laid on Tuesday by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at Taraluvada in Andhra Pradesh. The project is being developed through a strategic collaboration involving Adani Group and Bharti Airtel.

Gigawatt-Scale AI Infrastructure

The scale of the project is unprecedented in India’s digital infrastructure landscape. According to Jeet Adani, the facility is expected to develop 1 gigawatt of data center capacity at a single location, nearly matching the country’s current total capacity of around 1.3 GW.

The project will be executed through Adani’s data center arm AdaniConneX and Airtel’s subsidiary Nxtra, forming a powerful alliance to deliver next-generation AI infrastructure.

Powered by Renewable Energy

A key highlight of the initiative is its focus on sustainability. The data center will be powered entirely by renewable energy, significantly reducing operational costs and supporting scalable AI adoption.

Industry leaders emphasized that energy efficiency is critical to AI operations, as computing costs are closely tied to power consumption. Lower energy costs are expected to make AI training and deployment more accessible across industries.

Strengthening Global Connectivity

Speaking at the event, Minister Vaishnaw said the project will play a crucial role in transforming Visakhapatnam into an “AI City.”

The initiative includes deployment of advanced submarine cable systems and high-speed fiber networks, which will reduce latency and enhance connectivity between India and major global regions including Europe, West Asia, Africa, and the United States.

Push for Domestic Manufacturing

Highlighting India’s growing electronics manufacturing capabilities, Vaishnaw urged global tech firms, including Sundar Pichai, to expand local production of servers, GPUs, and AI chips.

India currently meets nearly 50% of its domestic electronics demand and has emerged as a major exporter of mobile devices, signaling strong potential for deeper integration into the global tech supply chain.

Economic and Sectoral Impact

The project is expected to have far-reaching implications across multiple sectors, including education, healthcare, aviation, logistics, and agriculture.

Rakesh Bharti Mittal described Visakhapatnam as evolving from a traditional maritime gateway into a digital “intelligence edge” hub for India.

Meanwhile, Airtel Vice Chairman Gopal Vittal highlighted the company’s integrated capabilities in green energy and ultra-low latency networks as key enablers of the project.

Strategic Outlook

The investment aligns closely with India’s broader vision of becoming a global technology powerhouse. Supported by policy initiatives under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, the project underscores growing confidence among global and domestic corporations in India’s digital future.

With lower energy costs expected to reduce AI computing expenses, the initiative is likely to accelerate innovation and create new technology-driven employment opportunities across the country.
