The world-famous Burj Al Arab—often described as the only “seven-star” hotel—will shut down for 18 months to undergo its first major refurbishment since opening in 1999.
Owned by Jumeirah Group, the sail-shaped landmark is set for a comprehensive upgrade aimed at enhancing its ultra-luxury experience while preserving its iconic identity.
First Major Overhaul in Over Two Decades
This marks the first large-scale renovation in the hotel’s 25+ year history. The project will be carried out in phases and will primarily focus on interior transformations, modernizing guest suites and public spaces.
The redesign is being led by renowned Paris-based architect Tristan Auer, known for his work in high-end hospitality and luxury residences.
A staff member confirmed the closure, noting that while the timeline is set at 18 months, minor adjustments may occur depending on project progress.
Tourism Context and Strategic Timing
The decision comes at a time when Dubai’s tourism sector is experiencing a moderate slowdown following the post-pandemic travel surge, along with the impact of ongoing geopolitical uncertainties in the region.
Industry experts say the timing allows the hotel to upgrade during a softer demand cycle, positioning it strongly for future growth.
Guest Relocation Plan
To ensure continuity in service, guests with existing bookings will be relocated to nearby Jumeirah properties, maintaining the brand’s luxury standards.
What to Expect After Reopening
The refurbished Burj Al Arab is expected to feature:
- Upgraded luxury suites and interiors
- Enhanced guest amenities and experiences
- Modernized design aligned with evolving global luxury trends
Dubai’s Long-Term Luxury Vision
The renovation highlights Dubai’s continued investment in maintaining its status as a global luxury tourism hub. Even as competition intensifies worldwide, the city is focusing on innovation, modernization, and premium experiences.
Once reopened, the Burj Al Arab is expected to attract a new wave of high-end travelers, reinforcing its reputation as one of the most iconic hotels in the world.
