New Delhi / Kyiv | April 21, 2026
Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that India and Ukraine are close to finalizing a key security cooperation agreement, marking a significant step forward in bilateral defense ties.
In a statement shared on social media, Zelenskyy said both nations are accelerating efforts to formalize the pact, which is expected to be announced soon as an official agreement.
The development follows a recent visit to India by Rustem Umerov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security Council, who held high-level discussions with Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
Focus on Defense and Security Cooperation
Officials familiar with the discussions said the proposed agreement aims to enhance defense collaboration, intelligence sharing, and strategic coordination between the two countries.
Ukraine, currently navigating its fifth year of conflict with Russia, is increasingly sharing its battlefield experience—particularly in drone warfare and air defense systems—with global partners. India is seen as a key partner interested in leveraging this expertise to strengthen its own defense capabilities.
Sharing War-Time Expertise
Kyiv’s experience in modern warfare, including the use of advanced drone technologies and layered air defense strategies, has drawn international attention. Analysts say India’s interest reflects a broader push to modernize its military systems and adapt to evolving security challenges.
The potential agreement could open avenues for joint research, technology transfer, and training programs in these critical areas.
India Reaffirms Commitment to Diplomacy
During the talks, Ajit Doval reiterated India’s long-standing position that the ongoing conflict should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
India has maintained a carefully balanced stance since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine War, advocating peaceful resolution while engaging with both Kyiv and Moscow.
Umerov expressed appreciation for India’s approach and its understanding of efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.
Strategic Implications
The proposed India-Ukraine defense pact signals a deepening of strategic ties at a time of shifting global alliances and heightened geopolitical tensions. Experts say the agreement could reshape defense cooperation dynamics and expand India’s international security partnerships.
With formalization expected soon, the deal is likely to become a key milestone in India’s evolving foreign and defense policy framework.
