New Delhi, India — April 19, 2026

India is witnessing an unusually early onset of extreme summer conditions, with temperatures in several regions already resembling peak June heat levels by mid-April. The intense sunshine and rising heat have made daytime outdoor activity increasingly difficult, especially across northern parts of the country.

According to the India Meteorological Department, temperatures are expected to climb further in the coming days, raising concerns about prolonged heatwave conditions.

North India Braces for Sharp Temperature Rise

The weather agency has forecast a significant increase in temperatures across northern states, including Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, where mercury levels could rise by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius over the next five days.

Eastern regions are also expected to see a temperature increase of 2 to 3 degrees, intensifying already warm conditions.

Heatwave Alerts Issued in Multiple States

The IMD has issued heatwave warnings for parts of eastern and western India.

  • Severe heat conditions are expected in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Odisha through April 22.
  • High temperatures combined with dry winds are likely to worsen daytime conditions, increasing health risks such as dehydration and heatstroke.

 Coastal Regions Face High Humidity

While inland areas grapple with scorching heat, coastal states such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala are expected to experience high humidity levels, leading to uncomfortable and oppressive weather conditions.

Meanwhile, states like Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand are likely to see warm nights, offering little relief from daytime heat.

Relief in Northern Hills and Northeast

Amid the rising temperatures, some regions are expected to receive temporary relief.

  • Light snowfall and rainfall are forecast in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh.
  • Rainfall alerts have also been issued for northeastern states, including Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, through April 21.

Early Summer Raises Concerns

The early arrival of extreme heat has raised concerns among weather experts about the intensity of the upcoming summer season. With temperatures already nearing peak levels, authorities are closely monitoring conditions and advising precautionary measures.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and follow official advisories as heatwave risks increase.
