Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday described the failure to pass the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha as a “major victory for democracy and the Constitution,” launching a sharp critique of the central government.

Addressing a press conference after the development, Gandhi said the outcome reflected the strength of democratic institutions and opposition unity in Parliament.

Allegations of Undermining Federal Structure

Gandhi accused the government of attempting to weaken India’s federal framework and democratic processes through the proposed legislation. She claimed that opposition parties collectively thwarted what she described as a strategy that could have undermined constitutional principles.

“This is not just a win for the Constitution and the country, but also for the united opposition,” she said, adding that the political setback was evident in the response of ruling party leaders.

‘Women’s Issues Being Politically Exploited’

The Congress leader further alleged that women’s issues were being used as a political tool. According to Gandhi, the government’s approach was aimed at gaining electoral advantage regardless of whether the bill passed or failed.

She argued that if the bill had been cleared, it would have been projected as a political achievement, while its failure could be used to portray opposition parties as anti-women.

“Becoming a champion of women’s rights is not easy,” Gandhi said, questioning the government’s intent and describing the move as a calculated political strategy.

Push for Immediate Implementation of Women’s Reservation Law

Gandhi renewed her demand for the immediate implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill passed unanimously in 2023. She urged the government to reintroduce the legislation and enforce it without delay.

“If minor amendments are required, they should be made swiftly, but the law must be implemented now,” she said, emphasizing that women should receive their rights without further delay.

Criticism Over Economic Issues and Policy Decisions

Expanding her criticism, Gandhi also raised concerns over rising inflation, stating that increasing prices of cooking gas, fruits, vegetables, and essential goods were disproportionately affecting women.

She further questioned recent policy decisions by the central government, suggesting that international pressures appeared to be influencing key agreements, including those involving the United States.

‘Women Are Not Unaware,’ Says Gandhi

In a strongly worded statement, Gandhi said that women across the country are fully aware of their challenges and cannot be misled by political messaging.

“Women are not unaware. They see everything,” she said, adding that symbolic outreach and media campaigns would not substitute for concrete policy action.

She concluded by urging the government to act decisively and deliver tangible outcomes, particularly on women’s rights and economic relief.
