Voting for the 2026 Assembly Elections concluded on Thursday across Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry, witnessing strong voter participation and peaceful polling, according to preliminary data released by election authorities.
Early estimates as of 5:00 PM indicate that Puducherry recorded the highest turnout at 86.92%, followed by Assam with 84.42% and Kerala at 75.01%, reflecting robust democratic engagement across the regions.
Strong Voter Participation Across States
Polling began at 7:00 AM under tight security arrangements and continued smoothly throughout the day. Voters turned out in large numbers, with long queues observed at multiple polling stations, signaling high enthusiasm and civic participation.
Election officials noted that final turnout figures may vary slightly after complete data consolidation, but the overall trend points to increased voter engagement compared to previous elections.
Assam Records Higher Turnout Than Previous Election
In Assam, voting was conducted across 126 assembly constituencies spanning 35 districts, with 722 candidates contesting. The state recorded an estimated 84.42% turnout, surpassing the 82.04% turnout in the 2021 elections.
The ruling NDA alliance, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is aiming for a third consecutive term, while the Congress party is attempting a political comeback after nearly a decade.
Among constituencies, Dalgaon reported the highest turnout at 94.57%, while Amri recorded the lowest at 70.40%. Voting was conducted at over 31,490 polling stations, all under strict security protocols.
Puducherry Leads in Voter Turnout
Puducherry emerged as the frontrunner in voter participation, registering 86.92% turnout, the highest among the three regions. The strong turnout highlights heightened voter awareness and engagement in the Union Territory.
Kerala Sees Steady Participation
Kerala recorded a turnout of approximately 75.01%, indicating steady participation. While slightly lower than Assam and Puducherry, the turnout reflects consistent voter engagement in the southern state.
Tripura Bypoll Concludes Peacefully
Meanwhile, a by-election in the Dharmanagar constituency of Tripura concluded peacefully, recording a turnout of 79.84% despite adverse weather conditions.
Polling was conducted across 55 booths, with around 46,142 voters eligible to decide the fate of six candidates. Authorities ensured transparency through webcasting at all polling stations, along with the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and VVPAT systems.
The bypoll was necessitated following the demise of BJP MLA and Assembly Speaker Bishwabandhu Sen.
Election Activity Continues Elsewhere
In other political developments, election campaigning continued in West Bengal, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a public rally in Haldia, signaling ongoing political momentum in the region.
