New Delhi, India — March 13, 2026
Amid escalating tensions in West Asia and reports of disruptions to oil and gas shipments in the Strait of Hormuz region, the Government of India has assured citizens that there is no shortage of fuel in the country.
Officials said that India currently has adequate reserves of petrol, diesel, and cooking gas, and supply chains remain fully operational. The government has also instructed state administrations to take strict action against hoarding and misinformation related to fuel availability.
Government Urges Public Not to Panic
During a joint press briefing, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, said the government is closely monitoring the evolving situation in West Asia.
She emphasized that oil and gas supplies across the country remain stable, urging citizens not to believe rumors or make panic purchases.
“The supply of petroleum products and cooking gas in India is normal, and there is no reason for consumers to panic or rush to book additional fuel,” Sharma said.
India’s Refining Capacity and Fuel Production
Officials highlighted that India has a total refining capacity of about 258 million metric tonnes, which allows the country to maintain strong domestic production of key fuels.
According to Sharma, all refineries in India are currently operating at 100 percent or higher capacity and have sufficient crude oil reserves. As a result, the country does not currently require additional imports of petrol or diesel to meet domestic demand.
LPG Supply Remains Stable Nationwide
The government also clarified that there has been no disruption in the supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
Across India’s network of more than 25,000 LPG distributors, there have been no reports of supply shortages, officials said.
Domestic consumers are receiving LPG cylinders without interruptions, while hospitals and educational institutions are being prioritized in case of high demand.
Domestic LPG Production Increased
To strengthen supply security, the government has increased domestic LPG production by nearly 30 percent compared with levels recorded on March 5.
Additional commercial LPG cylinders have also been supplied to state governments, enabling local authorities to prioritize distribution based on demand and essential services.
PNG and CNG Supplies Continue Without Disruption
Officials also confirmed that supplies of piped natural gas (PNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) remain uninterrupted for households and commercial users.
Commercial consumers were advised to contact their local city gas distribution networks or authorized dealers for any supply-related information.
Additional Kerosene Allocation for States
The government has also approved the distribution of an additional 48,000 kiloliters of kerosene to ensure fuel availability in areas that rely on kerosene supplies.
State governments have been asked to identify districts where the additional allocation can be distributed effectively.
At the same time, Coal India Limited has been directed to ensure adequate coal supplies for small and medium consumers as part of efforts to strengthen alternative fuel availability.
Government Appeals Against Rumors
Concluding the briefing, Sharma urged citizens to avoid spreading or believing unverified information about fuel shortages.
She reiterated that India currently has sufficient oil and gas reserves, and supply systems are functioning normally despite global tensions.
