In a major milestone for Indian academia and global science policy maker, prominent computer scientist, digital diplomacy expert, and rehabilitation technology pioneer Dr. D.P. Sharma has been appointed Lead Author for UNESCO‘s high-level report on “Science and Innovations.” Specifically, he will spearhead the chapter on “Bridging the Digital Divide Between Government and Private Sector in Science and Technological Innovation.”
The report, published every five years by UNESCO, serves as a key strategic guide for international cooperation in science, technology, and innovation (STI). Dr. Sharma’s contribution will analyze comparative innovation landscapes, focusing on coordination challenges and synergies between public infrastructure and private sector agility—particularly in developing nations. It aims to provide a roadmap for accelerating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through inclusive technological advancements and strengthen the Global South’s perspective in global STI discourse.
Dr. Sharma brings extensive expertise to the role, with 28 international books, 6 patents, over 206 indexed research papers, and advisory positions with UNDP, ILO, IGF, and universities across Europe, Asia, and Africa. A recipient of 68 national and international awards, he is recognized as a “living legend” in computer science and assistive technologies. He also serves as National Brand Ambassador for Swachh Bharat Mission, appointed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
This appointment highlights India’s growing leadership in digital diplomacy and equitable technology access, positioning the nation to influence policies that close innovation gaps and foster sustainable global progress.
