Delhi, India — March 6, 2026
Team India has asserted strong dominance throughout the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, marching confidently into the final against New Zealand with explosive performances, led by wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson, who has emerged as a serious contender for Player of the Tournament.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday released its shortlist of eight nominees for the prestigious Player of the Tournament award. Samson features prominently after a remarkable turnaround in the tournament. Initially left out of the playing XI for the early matches, the Kerala star exploded once given his chance, earning back-to-back Player of the Match awards and playing a pivotal role in India’s journey to the title decider.
In four matches, Samson has amassed 232 runs at an outstanding average of 77.33 and a blistering strike rate of 201.73. His standout knocks include a match-winning 97 off 50 balls against West Indies in the virtual quarter-final, guiding India to a five-wicket victory, and a breathtaking 89 off just 42 deliveries against England in the semi-final, powering a thrilling seven-run win.
Other top contenders on the ICC list include:
- England’s all-rounder Will Jacks (226 runs & 9 wickets in 8 matches)
- Pakistan opener Sahibzada Farhan (record 383 runs in one T20 World Cup)
- South Africa pacer Lungi Ngidi (12 wickets in 7 games)
- South Africa captain Aiden Markram (286 runs in 8 matches)
- New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra (128 runs & 11 wickets)
- New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Seifert (274 runs in 8 matches)
- USA bowler Shadley van Schalkwyk (13 wickets in just 4 matches)
This marks the fourth time India has reached a T20 World Cup final and the second consecutive appearance following their 2024 triumph. A victory over New Zealand in the final would make India the first team ever to win back-to-back T20 World Cup titles. New Zealand, runners-up in 2021, are appearing in their second final.
With Samson’s aggressive batting and India’s all-round depth, expectations are sky-high as the Men in Blue aim to defend their crown and etch their name in T20 history.
