🌨️ India Weather Update: Changing Patterns Across Regions

Weather conditions are shifting across several parts of India, with snowfall likely in higher elevations of Uttarakhand, falling temperatures in northwest India, and rain accompanied by strong winds forecast for southern and island regions.

According to the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), multiple weather systems are influencing conditions nationwide, leading to unstable atmospheric patterns.

❄️ Snowfall and Light Rain in Uttarakhand

Higher altitude areas of Uttarakhand may witness light rainfall and snowfall in the coming hours. A Western Disturbance is currently active over northern Rajasthan and impacting parts of Punjab and Haryana. The system extends between 3 to 7 kilometers above ground level, contributing to weather fluctuations across northwest India.

Residents in mountainous regions have been advised to remain cautious, as temperatures are expected to drop further, increasing the chill factor.

Additionally, a cyclonic circulation that formed over southwest Rajasthan has now shifted toward northeast Rajasthan. A trough line stretching from North Konkan through Gujarat to eastern Rajasthan is also contributing to unstable conditions.

🌬️ Subtropical Jet Stream Active in Northeast

A strong subtropical westerly jet stream, moving at approximately 115 knots, remains active over northeast India. This upper-atmospheric system is creating pressure variations and may cause short-term weather fluctuations in the region.

🌧️ Rain & Thunderstorm Alert for Southern and Island Regions

A low-pressure area over the equatorial Indian Ocean and southwest Bay of Bengal is gradually moving west-northwest toward Sri Lanka. Its impact is expected to bring rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across southern India and nearby island territories.

  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Thunderstorms with winds of 30–40 km/h are expected.

  • Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala: Rain, lightning, and gusty winds likely between February 20 and 22.

🌊 Rough Sea Conditions; Fishermen Advised to Avoid Sailing

Sea conditions may deteriorate significantly:

  • Gulf of Mannar and Comorin region: Winds may increase from 40–50 km/h to 60 km/h.

  • Southwest Bay of Bengal and near Sri Lanka’s eastern coast: Winds likely at 45–55 km/h.

Authorities have advised fishermen to avoid venturing into deep sea during this period.

🌡️ Temperature Outlook

Northwest India

  • Minimum temperatures may drop by 2–4°C over the next 48 hours.

  • No major change expected for about five days after that.

  • Maximum temperatures may fall by 2–4°C over the next 24 hours, then gradually rise for two days before stabilizing.
