The controversy surrounding Ghooskhor Pandit, starring Manoj Bajpayee, has taken a decisive turn. Following sustained objections over the film’s title, the makers have agreed to change the name of the project, as confirmed by Netflix before the Delhi High Court.
The dispute began soon after the film’s announcement, with multiple groups objecting to the use of the word “Pandit” in the title, calling it offensive and socially provocative.
Netflix Updates Court During Hearing
The Delhi High Court was hearing a petition seeking a ban on the release and streaming of the film. The petitioner alleged that the title and proposed content were defamatory and capable of disturbing communal harmony.
During the proceedings, Netflix informed the court that the makers have agreed to rename the film. The OTT platform also assured the court that all promotional materials related to the original title have already been removed from social media and digital platforms.
Following this submission, the court proceeded to close the matter.
Court Disposes of the Case
A single-judge bench led by Justice Purushendra Kumar Kaurav noted Netflix’s statement and observed that no further directions were required, as the producers were willing to change the film’s title and had withdrawn promotional content.
Based on these assurances, the court disposed of the petition.
Petition Sought Immediate Ban on Release
The plea filed before the court claimed that the title Ghooskhor Pandit tarnished the image of Hindu priests and a specific community, alleging that it linked religious identity with corruption and bribery.
Advocate Vineet Jindal, who challenged the film’s release, argued that the title was deliberately provocative and communal in nature. Another petitioner, Mahendra Chaturvedi, stated that the word “Pandit” historically represents scholarship, moral conduct, and spiritual authority, and that its use in this context was disrespectful and damaging.
The petition demanded an immediate stay on the film’s release and online streaming.
Film Details and Cast
The film is produced by Neeraj Pandey and features Manoj Bajpayee in the role of a corrupt police officer.
The ensemble cast includes Divya Dutta, Nushrratt Bharuccha, Saqib Saleem, Shraddha Das, Akshay Oberoi, and Kiku Sharda.
The film is slated for release on Netflix, though the new title has not yet been officially announced.
