Delhi-NCR Weather Turns Harsh as Rain and Cold Wave Grip Capital

New Delhi, India — January 27, 2026

Cold conditions intensified across Delhi-NCR on Tuesday as rainfall and strong icy winds swept through the region, sharply altering the weather pattern. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had already warned of a change in weather and issued a Yellow Alert for January 27, citing rainfall and gusty winds.

Tuesday morning began with dense fog and haze, followed by strong cold winds that significantly increased the chill factor. The rainfall further lowered temperatures, forcing residents to stay indoors amid harsh winter conditions.

Western Disturbance Triggers Weather Shift

According to the IMD, the sudden change in weather is due to an active western disturbance impacting northwest India. Rain accompanied by strong winds began early Tuesday and is expected to continue throughout the day across Delhi-NCR.

The weather department has warned of light to moderate rainfall, strong surface winds, and deteriorating conditions, advising residents to remain cautious. After days of severe cold, the region may again experience storm-like conditions, further intensifying the winter spell.

Temperature Drops, Visibility Affected

Rainfall led to a sharp drop in daytime temperatures, while early morning low visibility disrupted traffic movement across several parts of the capital. Cold winds added to the discomfort, keeping people confined indoors.

Meteorologists indicate that similar conditions may persist over the next few days, potentially worsening the cold wave across the region.

Delhi Air Quality Slips Back to ‘Poor’

Even as rain lashed the city, Delhi’s air quality deteriorated once again. Data from the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi showed the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) at 281 on Tuesday morning, placing it in the ‘Poor’ category.

This comes after brief relief last week when changes in wind direction and speed had improved air quality levels. AQI readings had dropped to 192 on Saturday and 152 on Sunday, offering temporary respite.
