Chennai — January 11, 2026
The release of Thalapathy Vijay’s final film Jana Nayagan has been pushed into uncertainty after a fast-escalating legal battle over censorship objections reached the Supreme Court of India, just days before its planned theatrical debut.
The controversy stems from objections raised by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which flagged certain scenes as potentially hurting religious sentiments and questioned the portrayal of the armed forces. These objections triggered a certification delay that ultimately derailed the film’s January 9, 2026 release.
According to producers KVN Productions, the film had already complied with 27 suggested cuts. However, just four days before release, on January 5, the CBFC referred the film to a Revising Committee, prompting the makers to seek urgent judicial intervention.
Madras High Court Twist
On the morning of January 9, a single-judge bench of the Madras High Court, led by Justice P.T. Asha, ruled in favor of the filmmakers and directed the CBFC to immediately issue a U/A 16+ certificate. The court strongly criticized last-minute objections, calling them a “dangerous trend” that disrupts the film industry.
However, the relief was short-lived. By the afternoon, the CBFC challenged the order before a Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, which imposed an interim stay on the single-judge ruling. The stay effectively halted the film’s release on the scheduled date.
Supreme Court Appeal
Following the High Court stay, the producers have now moved the Supreme Court, seeking urgent the Supreme Court, seeking urgent relief to clear the way for the film’s theatrical release. The next hearing in the Madras High Court is scheduled for January 21, 2026, while the Supreme Court is expected to take up the matter sooner due to the time-sensitive nature of the release.
Pongal Release Impact
With Jana Nayagan missing the crucial Pongal holiday window, several theaters across Tamil Nadu have opted to re-release Vijay’s blockbuster Theri to fill the gap and cater to fans during the festive season.
Industry Reaction
The legal battle has reignited a broader debate in the film industry over freedom of expression versus censorship. Prominent filmmakers and actors, including Kamal Haasan and Pa. Ranjith, have publicly voiced support for Vijay and the filmmakers, urging reforms in the certification process.
As Vijay prepares for his transition from cinema to full-time politics, the fate of Jana Nayagan—widely billed as his cinematic farewell—now rests with the country’s highest court.
