New Delhi, India — January 3, 2026
Severe cold conditions combined with dense fog continued to affect Delhi-NCR on Saturday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a Yellow Alert for the national capital due to reduced visibility and cold wave conditions.
Temperature Update
According to IMD data, the minimum temperature recorded at the Safdarjung weather station on Saturday morning stood at 8.1°C, around 1 degree above normal. However, colder pockets persisted across the region, with Ayanagar reporting a lower minimum of 6.9°C.
The maximum temperature for the day is expected to hover between 17°C and 18°C, remaining below the seasonal average and adding to the persistent winter chill.
Fog and Visibility Impact
Dense fog covered Delhi and surrounding areas during the early morning hours, leading to significantly reduced visibility. The poor visibility conditions are likely to affect road traffic, rail services, and flight operations.
Several flights at Indira Gandhi International Airport were impacted due to fog-related delays, officials said.
Cold Wave and Air Quality
IMD has forecast cold wave conditions in parts of Delhi between January 3 and January 6, with chilly northwesterly winds intensifying the cold sensation.
Meanwhile, air quality showed marginal improvement, with Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded in the ‘Poor’ category, ranging between 222 and 240. As a result, GRAP Stage-3 restrictions have been lifted, while Stage-1 and Stage-2 measures remain in force.
Daytime Forecast
Skies are expected to remain mostly clear during the day
Winds will blow from the northwest at a speed of 6–10 km/h, maintaining the cold conditions
Advisory
Authorities have advised residents to exercise caution while traveling during early morning and late-night hours, use fog lights on vehicles, and wear adequate warm clothing. Citizens are encouraged to monitor IMD Delhi updates for the latest weather advisories.
