What Is Panchang?

Pandit Ajay Kaushik explained that the Hindu Panchang, also known as the Vedic calendar, is used for precise calculation of time and cosmic movements. It consists of five elements, which guide daily rituals and auspicious activities.

The Five Elements of Panchang

1. Tithi

A tithi is the time taken for the Moon to move 12 degrees ahead of the Sun. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month, divided into Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha. The final tithi of Krishna Paksha is known as Amavasya.

2. Nakshatra

Nakshatras are lunar constellations. There are 27 nakshatras, each ruled by a planet, starting from Ashwini to Revati.

3. Vara (Weekday)

There are seven weekdays, each ruled by a planet—Monday through Sunday.

4. Yoga

Yoga is formed by specific angular positions of the Sun and Moon. There are 27 yogas, including Vishkumbh, Priti, Ayushman, Shool, Siddhi, Shubh, and Vaidhriti.

5. Karana

Each tithi has two karanas. There are 11 karanas in total. Vishti Karana, also known as Bhadra, is considered inauspicious for auspicious activities.
