New Delhi, India , December 16, 2025 :

India and the United States are very close to finalizing an initial trade agreement, according to Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, signaling a potential breakthrough in bilateral economic ties amid shifting global trade dynamics. The proposed agreement is expected to focus on reciprocal tariff arrangements, aimed at creating a more balanced and mutually beneficial trade framework between the two economies.

Speaking on the progress of negotiations, Agrawal clarified that while discussions are at an advanced stage, no fixed deadline has been set for concluding the deal. He emphasized that both sides are working to resolve outstanding issues through dialogue, reflecting a pragmatic approach as global trade faces uncertainty due to changing tariff regimes and policy realignments under new political administrations worldwide.

In parallel, India is also making steady progress in trade negotiations with the European Union, with officials indicating that long-standing differences are being addressed incrementally. These parallel talks underscore India’s broader strategy to diversify export markets and strengthen trade partnerships with major global economies.

The developments come at a time when Indian exports to the United States surged sharply in November, offering momentum to the ongoing negotiations. Trade analysts believe that an initial India-US trade pact could significantly boost bilateral trade volumes, enhance supply chain resilience, and provide greater certainty to businesses on both sides.

If finalized, the agreement would mark a key step toward deeper economic cooperation between India and the US, setting the stage for more comprehensive trade arrangements in the future.
