Abu Dhabi, UAE : In one of the most dramatic finales in Formula One history, Lando Norris clinched his maiden World Drivers’ Championship, edging Red Bull’s four-time defending champion Max Verstappen by just two points at the Yas Marina Circuit. The 25-year-old British star becomes McLaren’s first world champion since Mika Häkkinen in 1999, marking a defining moment for both team and driver.
Starting from pole position, Norris managed the pressure of a chaotic and strategy-heavy race featuring multiple safety car periods, tire gambles, and close wheel-to-wheel battles. Although he finished second, victory went to teammate Oscar Piastri, whose win secured McLaren a remarkable second place in the Constructors’ standings.
Norris’s season was characterized by stunning consistency across 24 races, delivering six victories and nine additional podiums. His performance demonstrated maturity beyond his years, earning widespread praise and comparisons to legends like Lewis Hamilton.
Verstappen Falters in Final Moments
Max Verstappen, chasing a historic fifth consecutive championship, mounted relentless pressure throughout the race. However, a late pit stop miscue cost him crucial seconds, ultimately costing him the title. Despite the setback, Verstappen’s season-long pace kept the championship fight alive until the final laps.
McLaren’s Remarkable Turnaround
Much of McLaren’s success is credited to team principal Andrea Stella, who oversaw a transformative mid-season car upgrade. Norris also leaned heavily on guidance from mentor and four-time world champion Alain Prost, whose influence reportedly contributed to Norris’s composure during the high-stakes finale.
