New Delhi, November 30, 2025:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued severe cold wave warnings for North India, with temperatures plunging far below seasonal averages. On November 30, 2025, Delhi recorded a minimum of 5°C, Punjab hit 3°C, and Haryana reported heavy frost in several districts.

According to IMD, the early-season chill is caused by western disturbances combined with lingering La Niña conditions, bringing temperatures 4–6°C below normal. The cold wave is expected to impact 10 states, including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh.

Safety and Relief Measures

IMD Director Mrutyunjay Mohapatra advised that vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly, children, and the homeless, avoid outdoor exposure. Authorities have set up bonfires and emergency shelters, assisting an estimated 5 million people without homes.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya allocated ₹500 crore for additional shelters, stocking over 1 million blankets to help residents endure the frigid conditions. Schools in 500 districts have been temporarily closed to protect students.

Transport and Agriculture Impact

Heavy fog reduced visibility to 50 meters on major routes like NH-44, delaying over 200 trains across the region. Agricultural experts estimate wheat crop losses at around ₹2,000 crore, citing frost damage and delayed sowing in key northern states.

Meteorologists warn that the cold wave may persist for several days, urging citizens to take precautionary measures, including using warm clothing, limiting outdoor activities, and maintaining proper heating arrangements.
