Minneapolis, November 23, 2025 :
The president Donald Trump has announced the immediate termination of temporary legal protections for thousands of Somali migrants living in Minnesota, citing national security concerns. The move affects one of the largest Somali diasporas in the United States and has sparked swift backlash across the state.
The administration’s decision revokes Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somali nationals, leaving many families uncertain about their legal standing and future. Immigrant rights groups condemned the action as discriminatory and vowed to challenge it in court. Several legal organizations have already filed petitions seeking emergency injunctions to halt the policy’s implementation.
Large crowds gathered in Minneapolis and other cities across Minnesota to protest the announcement. Demonstrators carried signs demanding justice and chanting messages of solidarity with the Somali community. Local officials warn the decision could deepen community tensions and disrupt long-established immigrant networks.
Political analysts say the move marks one of the administration’s most aggressive immigration actions to date, reigniting debates over national security, humanitarian responsibility, and the rights of long-term U.S. residents.
The White House has defended the decision, arguing that protections can no longer be justified under current security assessments.
