New Delhi, Nov 17: Delhi woke up to a choking blanket of smog on Sunday, with the city’s air quality slipping into the ‘severe’ category as the overall AQI surged to 427 in areas like Bawana, up from 359 at 7 AM.
Thick haze reduced visibility around key locations such as India Gate, ITO, and Kartavya Path, disrupting traffic and causing widespread discomfort for residents.
GRAP-III Measures Fail to Slow the Surge
Despite strict GRAP-III emergency actions, pollution levels continued to climb. The measures include:
Ban on non-essential construction
Restrictions on polluting vehicles
Enhanced road-watering
Anti-dust drives and industrial emission checks
Officials said stagnant winds and accumulated overnight pollutants triggered the sharp spike.
Health Warnings Issued
Doctors reported rising respiratory complaints and advised the vulnerable population—including children, seniors, and asthma patients—to limit outdoor movement.
