Drastic Weather Fluctuations Across India
Significant weather fluctuations are being observed across India. While rain and snowfall persist in the northern hilly regions from Kashmir to Kedarnath, the temperature in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and other plains has started to climb sharply. Additionally, a premature heatwave is affecting parts of West and Central India, raising concerns about an early summer onset.
Heavy Rain and Snowfall in Northern Hill States
The hilly regions of North-West India, including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, continue to witness heavy snowfall and rain. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), snowfall has been recorded in Kedarnath and surrounding areas in Uttarakhand. In Kashmir, regions like Gulmarg, Zojila, and Rajdan Pass have experienced continuous snowfall and rain for the second consecutive day.
In Himachal Pradesh, multiple avalanches were reported near Solanganala on the Manali-Keylong National Highway, disrupting movement in the region. Tourists and locals have been advised to exercise caution due to the increased risk of landslides and road blockages.
Rising Temperatures in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Central India
Contrary to the chilly conditions in the north, the plains of North, West, and Central India are witnessing a sharp increase in temperature. The IMD has reported that maximum temperatures in Gujarat and Rajasthan have surged to 40–42°C. In several parts of Odisha, Vidarbha, Konkan, and Goa, the maximum temperature ranged between 38–40°C.
Premature Heatwave in West and Central India
A premature heatwave has already begun affecting parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Vidarbha, which is unusual for early March. The heatwave conditions have led to dry and arid weather, increasing concerns for water scarcity and crop damage. With rising temperatures, health authorities have urged residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
IMD Forecast: Further Increase in Temperature in the Coming Days
The IMD has predicted that temperatures will continue to rise across North-West and Central India in the next few days. A two to three-degree Celsius increase in maximum temperature is expected across the plains of North-West India and Central India.
Additionally, the Delhi-NCR region has also started to witness warmer days, with temperature surging above normal levels. Many regions in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana are also showing signs of early summer.
New Western Disturbance Expected to Change Weather Conditions
The IMD has issued an alert about an approaching Western Disturbance that could alter current weather patterns. By March 14, there is a high probability of rain and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh. Thunderstorms and lightning are also expected in these regions.
In plains like Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi-NCR, strong winds and light rainfall might provide temporary relief from the rising temperature.
Impact of Unusual Weather on Agriculture and Daily Life
The unexpected weather fluctuations are raising concerns in agriculture and daily life. The early heatwave poses a threat to standing crops, especially in states like Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. Farmers are being advised to take precautionary measures to prevent crop damage.
Similarly, the cold and wet conditions in the North have disrupted tourism and local businesses, particularly in areas dependent on mountain tourism and trekking activities.
Precautionary Measures for the Upcoming Weather Conditions
For People in Snow-Prone Regions:
- Avoid unnecessary travel in avalanche-prone areas.
- Keep emergency supplies such as food, medicine, and warm clothing.
- Stay updated with weather forecasts and government advisories.
For People in Heatwave-Affected Regions:
- Stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
- Wear light and breathable clothing to prevent heat exhaustion.
Keep cooling systems functional to manage extreme temperatures.
