Stockholm : Sweden is making bold strides towards becoming the first smoke-free nation in Europe. This ambitious goal is largely attributed to an unconventional tobacco product that does not involve smoking. Snus, as it’s locally known, is a moist powder tobacco product placed under the lip, and it’s deeply ingrained in Swedish culture. Remarkably, one out of every seven Swedes uses snus, indicating its widespread acceptance.

The Cultural Fabric of Snus in Sweden

For centuries, snus has been part of the Swedish way of life, akin to how wine is deeply embedded in the cultures of many European countries. Its popularity has not waned, and its roots can be traced back over 200 years. The Swedish government reports a striking decline in the number of smokers—from 15% of the population in 2005 to a mere 5.2% in the previous year. This figure is the lowest in Europe, setting a benchmark for public health. A country is considered smoke-free when the daily smoking rate among its population falls below 5%. Thanks to the widespread use of snus, Sweden has already achieved this target, reaching the European Union’s smoke-free goal set for 2050, a full 27 years ahead of schedule.

Regulatory Controversy and Acceptance

Despite its success in Sweden, snus has faced its share of controversy. The European Union imposed a ban on this product in 1992, but Sweden, joining the EU three years later, secured an exemption. The production of snus is a sophisticated affair, particularly in Gothenburg, where Swedish Match factories produce thousands of snus sachets daily. In 2021 alone, the company sold 27.7 million boxes in Sweden and Norway.

While traditional snus continues to be sold in Norway and the United States, the white snus gained popularity only 15 years ago. Its tobacco-free nature skirts the EU’s restrictions, but recently, countries like Belgium and the Netherlands have also banned this variant. Such measures highlight the ongoing debate regarding the place of such products in public health strategies.
