The Moscow Metro implements a range of methods to improve energy efficiency as part of a large-scale programme of the Moscow Government To reduce energy consumption, reports the Moscow Department of Transport.
One of the aims of the programme is to ensure that the Moscow Metro remains one of the most environmentally friendly types of transport. One of the main methods is equipping of 70% of trains (which is 4.4 thousand trains) by recirculation system, which allows motors to partially give back into the contact network the electricity when braking. Most of the route, trains run with engines off, which makes railway transport much more energy-efficient than other types of transport.
Moreover, Moskva and Moskva-2020 trains are equipped with LED interior lighting. The Moscow Metro has already installed 355 thousand energy-saving lamps, which is 40% of the total. They allow save energy and serve for several times longer than the usual ones.
Furthermore, the network replaced 53 escalators at 17 metro stations since 2010, and the number of escalators was increased at 6 stations. New escalators produced in Russia consume 30% less energy. These machines are installed in new stations and when outdated escalators are replaced with more energy-efficient ones.
The Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin supports energy efficiency in the Moscow Transport. In the Moscow Metro, we are implementing a large-scale programme to reduce energy consumption: most of the trains are equipped with the system of energy recovery, and 40% of the lighting in the stations are energy-saving. In addition, new Russian escalators are 30% more energy efficient. The metro continues to be one of the most environmentally friendly and energy efficient modes of transport, – said Maksim Liksutov, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport.
