Sleepless Nights Begin”: PM Modi’s Dig at Opposition During Mega Port Launch with Adani and Tharoor

Narendra Modi

INVC NEWS Thiruvananthapuram – On a crisp morning in Thiruvananthapuram, history was scripted as Vizhinjam International Port, one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, was officially inaugurated. The event was more than a developmental milestone; it became a political spectacle that drew national attention. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and Congress stalwart Shashi Tharoor sharing the stage, the ceremony sent powerful ripples through both industrial and political circles.

A Gateway to India’s Maritime Future

The Vizhinjam International Port is strategically located near the international shipping route and is set to transform India’s position in the global maritime trade network. Developed by the Adani Group, the port boasts deep-draft infrastructure, making it suitable for ultra-large container vessels. It is India’s first mega transshipment port and is expected to significantly reduce the country’s reliance on foreign ports such as Colombo, Singapore, and Dubai for container transshipment.

This port represents India’s push toward self-reliance in shipping and logistics. Designed to handle one million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) annually in its first phase, the Vizhinjam port is projected to enhance trade efficiency and reduce logistics costs, benefiting exporters and importers alike.

PM Modi’s Address: A Mixture of Development and Political Wit

Prime Minister Modi, while dedicating the port to the nation, hailed it as a “symbol of India’s maritime resurgence.” Emphasizing the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, he called the port a strategic asset that will unlock massive economic potential not just for Kerala but for the entire country.

However, the speech quickly took a humorous and politically charged turn. PM Modi, in his signature style, made a pointed remark that drew laughter from the audience and ignited political commentary. Referring to the presence of Shashi Tharoor, a prominent Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Modi quipped, “Seeing Shashi Tharoor here, I’m sure the news must have reached where it had to reach.” He followed it up with another punchline directed at Kerala CM Vijayan, stating, “You are a strong pillar of the INDIA bloc, but today’s program might give sleepless nights to many.”

These jabs, light-hearted on the surface, were widely interpreted as subtle digs at the opposition alliance, highlighting the awkward optics of a Congress MP sharing the spotlight with Modi and Adani—a scenario that few had anticipated.

Shashi Tharoor’s Presence Becomes the Talking Point

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the presence of Shashi Tharoor, who has often found himself at the crossroads of Congress’s internal politics and Kerala’s developmental aspirations. As the Member of Parliament for Thiruvananthapuram, Tharoor’s attendance was symbolically significant. It showcased political maturity and a commitment to development above party lines.

Despite being at ideological odds with the BJP, Tharoor greeted the Prime Minister at the airport and accompanied him to the event. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Tharoor wrote, “Despite a flight delay in Delhi, I reached Thiruvananthapuram on time to welcome the PM in my constituency.” His gesture was seen as a reaffirmation of democratic decorum and institutional respect, even amid deep political divides.

KC Venugopal’s Response: Congress Pushes Back

Not one to let the Prime Minister’s comments slide, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal offered a sharp rebuttal. He stated, “I don’t know why the Prime Minister is saying this. It’s not us but the Prime Minister who will have sleepless nights. The INDIA alliance is united and will continue to push on critical issues like the caste census.” He also referenced the Women’s Reservation Bill, accusing the BJP of using it for electoral gain without serious legislative intent.

Venugopal’s statement was an attempt to reframe the narrative and assert that the opposition bloc remains undeterred and focused on policy battles rather than media optics.

Adani Group’s Role in the Vizhinjam Port

The Adani Group, helmed by Gautam Adani, played a central role in the project’s execution. The port, envisioned nearly a decade ago, faced numerous hurdles including land acquisition issues, environmental clearances, and public protests. Despite these challenges, the project has now reached fruition under a public-private partnership (PPP) model with the Adani Group as the primary developer.

Gautam Adani, speaking at the ceremony, described the port as “a landmark in India’s journey to become a global maritime power.” He added that the Vizhinjam Port would create thousands of jobs, boost industrial growth in southern India, and establish Kerala as a major logistics hub.

Strategic and Economic Implications of Vizhinjam

The operationalization of Vizhinjam Port comes at a critical juncture when India is recalibrating its maritime and trade strategies. With China’s increasing dominance over global trade routes and ports, India’s effort to establish strategic infrastructure along its coastlines is both an economic and geopolitical move.

Vizhinjam’s capabilities will allow India to capture a significant share of international transshipment traffic, especially from African and Gulf nations. The port’s location—just 10 nautical miles from the international east-west shipping route—gives it a logistical edge that very few ports in the world can claim.

A Symbol of Cooperative Federalism and Political Drama

The convergence of leaders from divergent ideological backgrounds at Vizhinjam is being hailed as a moment of cooperative federalism—at least on the surface. The presence of PM Modi, a BJP stalwart; Pinarayi Vijayan, a CPI(M) leader; and Shashi Tharoor, a Congress MP, reflected a rare moment of unity, even if momentary.

Yet, it was also a day when political drama unfolded in full view. From Modi’s sarcasm to Tharoor’s gracious diplomacy and Venugopal’s rebuttal, the event displayed the theatrical essence of Indian democracy, where political rivalry and developmental duty often walk hand in hand.

Kerala’s Leap into the Future

With Vizhinjam now officially inaugurated, Kerala is poised to become a maritime and economic powerhouse. The port is expected to attract significant foreign direct investment (FDI) in sectors such as logistics, shipbuilding, port services, and trade facilitation. The adjacent areas are being developed into special economic zones (SEZs) and logistics parks, further amplifying the port’s economic impact.

This marks a bold step in Kerala’s journey toward becoming a high-growth economy within India. With tourism, IT, and now shipping forming a potent trifecta, the state is preparing for a dynamic shift in its economic trajectory.
