Zubeen Garg Death Mystery Deepens: Drummer Shekhar Jyoti Goswami Detained, Protests Erupt

Assam SIT Detains Musician in Zubeen Garg Death Probe

The investigation into the death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has taken a new turn. The Special Investigation Team (SIT), formed by the Assam government, has detained musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami as part of its ongoing probe.

Who is Shekhar Jyoti Goswami?

Shekhar Jyoti Goswami is best known as a drummer and longtime bandmate of Zubeen Garg. According to a report in The New Indian Express, he was with Zubeen during his final moments while the singer was scuba diving in Singapore.

Interestingly, his Instagram bio describes him not only as a drummer but also as a sound engineer, music producer, arranger, composer, and computer hardware engineer. Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact reason behind his detention.

Demands for Manager’s Arrest Grow

Alongside Goswami’s detention, tensions have escalated around Zubeen Garg’s associates. The SIT raided the residences of Shyamkanu Mahant, organizer of the Northeast India Festival, and Siddharth Sharma, Zubeen’s manager. However, both were reportedly absent during the raids.

Protests erupted outside Siddharth Sharma’s home, where locals demanded his immediate arrest. Some protesters even pelted stones as police escorted the SIT team, leading to the detention of two individuals for inciting violence.

The Tragic Death of Zubeen Garg

The 52-year-old legendary singer drowned while scuba diving in Singapore on September 19, 2025. He had traveled to the city-state to participate in the Northeast India Festival.

A death certificate from a Singapore hospital confirmed drowning as the cause of death. However, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed hope that the post-mortem report would shed more light. He also assured that if the SIT’s findings are unsatisfactory, the government will recommend a CBI inquiry.

Investigation Continues

The SIT is now under pressure to deliver results amid growing public anger and speculation. With Goswami’s detention and rising demands for Mahant and Sharma’s arrests, the case is drawing intense attention across Assam and beyond.
