China’s tech giant Xiaomi is accelerating its semiconductor ambitions with plans to develop its own high-end smartphone chips. According to Vice President Xu Fei, this move is aimed at strengthening Xiaomi’s global competitiveness, but the chips will not follow Apple’s annual launch schedule.
Xiaomi’s Semiconductor Mission
Last year, Xiaomi introduced its first system-on-chip (SoC), the XRing 01, based on 3-nanometer technology, one of the world’s most advanced manufacturing processes. The company has pledged 50 billion yuan ($7 billion) over the next decade for semiconductor development. Xiaomi estimates it will need to sell at least 10 million units per chip to break even on the investment.
Why Xiaomi Needs Its Own Chip
The SoC acts as the “brain” of a smartphone, integrating hardware and software for optimized performance. With Xiaomi’s own HyperOS (Android-based) and HyperAI (AI tools), developing proprietary chips will allow:
Faster smartphone performance
Improved battery efficiency
A smoother, more integrated user experience
Partnerships With Qualcomm and MediaTek
Currently, Xiaomi relies on Qualcomm and MediaTek chips, including in its recently launched Xiaomi 17. Xu Fei clarified that Xiaomi will continue collaborating with these partners while gradually developing its own chips.
Market Impact
Xiaomi’s chip development is not limited to smartphones. The expertise gained will benefit other products, including smartwatches, smart home devices, refrigerators, and electric vehicles. Experts believe this strategic move positions Xiaomi to compete with Apple, Samsung, and Huawei in the premium segment.
Strategic Approach
Xiaomi aims for a gradual and sustainable approach rather than rushing to release chips annually. Over the next decade, this strategy is expected to solidify its standing as a premium smartphone and smart device brand.
