Kolkata: The West Bengal government has begun emergency preparations after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of heavy rainfall across the state from October 1.
A senior government official stated that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has instructed all departments to remain on high alert. “Considering the situation, we have initiated extensive emergency measures. The Chief Minister is personally monitoring the developments,” he added.
🌧️ 24-Hour Control Room Activated
In the wake of recent tragedies where 12 people died due to heavy rain and electrocution in Kolkata and nearby areas, the state administration has set up a control room.
A senior IAS officer will oversee the center.
The control room will remain operational round the clock during the festival season — September 26 to October 7, October 20 to 24, and October 27 to 28.
🌊 IMD Forecast: Heavy Rain, Strong Winds & Rough Sea
According to the IMD, a low-pressure system is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal, triggering heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts between October 2 and 4.
Strong winds of 35–45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, are expected in coastal regions.
Sea conditions may remain rough during this period.
Fishermen advisory: Avoid venturing into the sea over the north and central Bay of Bengal, especially along the West Bengal–Odisha coasts, for at least two days.
⚠️ Administration on Alert
