New Delhi — : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a storm and heavy rain alert for eight states over the next five days, as the Southwest Monsoon advances rapidly, reaching cities weeks ahead of schedule. A Red Alert has been sounded for several districts in Maharashtra and Karnataka, with warnings of thunderstorms, lightning, and hailstorm in many parts of North and Central India.
Monsoon Arrives Early: Mumbai Breaks 107-Year May Rainfall Record
Mumbai experienced its earliest monsoon onset in 75 years, beating the previous record from 1956. Torrential downpours on Monday caused massive waterlogging, disrupted Central Railway operations, and submerged multiple areas including Byculla, Dadar, Matunga, and Badlapur. Local train services were severely hit, and over 250 flights were affected.
RED ALERT Issued in Maharashtra and Karnataka
The IMD has upgraded the Orange Alert to a Red Alert in the districts of Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri for Tuesday as well. Similar alerts have been issued for Dakshina Kannada and other parts of coastal Karnataka for the next five days.
Ground Situation: Flooding, Damage, and Relief Operations
Maharashtra: 13 NDRF and 2 SDRF teams have been deployed across rain-affected districts. Relief operations are ongoing in Mumbai, Palghar, Raigad, Thane, Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara.
Mumbai Metro: Water entered the Worli underground metro station (Metro Line 3), collapsing a false ceiling and damaging equipment.
Latur Lightning Strike: Two people died and six were injured in Ahmedpur tehsil due to lightning on Monday evening.
Kerala: 4 people have died, 29 homes were destroyed, and over 850 damaged. Relief camps have been opened in Wayanad, Idukki, and Kozhikode.
Drop in Temperature Expected in North India
States like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh saw a respite from the heat on Monday. IMD forecasts a 4–6°C drop in maximum temperature in the region over the next 24 hours, followed by a gradual rise later in the week.

From May 27 to June 1, thunderstorms, strong winds (40–50 kmph), and hailstorms are likely across:

Himachal Pradesh may witness hailstorms for the next two days, while heavy rainfall is expected throughout the northern hill regions.
