Caracas, Venezuela — January 7, 2026

Venezuela has declared a seven-day period of national mourning following a deadly U.S. military operation that resulted in the capture of former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, and left dozens of military personnel dead.

Acting President Delcy Rodriguez announced the mourning period on Tuesday after Venezuelan officials confirmed that approximately 24 members of the Venezuelan armed forces were killed during the U.S. raid carried out over the weekend. The operation took place on January 3, 2026, when U.S. Delta Force troops seized Maduro and Flores from their residence in Caracas.

Casualties and International Fallout

Cuba, a key ally of Venezuela, stated that 32 Cuban military and police personnel stationed in the country were also killed in the incident. In response, Havana declared two days of national mourning, marking one of the most serious overseas losses for Cuban forces in decades.

In Caracas, government supporters marched toward Rodriguez’s office, waving Venezuelan flags and denouncing U.S. intervention, as tensions rose across the capital.

U.S. Operation and Demands

The raid followed months of public threats by U.S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly accused Maduro of drug trafficking and narco-terrorism. Following the operation, U.S. officials reportedly issued demands to Venezuela’s interim leadership, including the establishment of an exclusive oil partnership, warning of further action if conditions are not met.

Maduro Detained in New York

Maduro and Flores are currently being held in a New York jail. During a court appearance in Manhattan federal court, Maduro pleaded not guilty to multiple drug-related charges, declaring himself “president of my country” and asserting his innocence. His next court hearing is scheduled for March 17, 2026.

Political Transition in Venezuela

Venezuela’s top court has formally designated Delcy Rodriguez as interim president, citing constitutional provisions following Maduro’s detention. The sudden leadership shift has intensified political uncertainty and raised concerns across the region.

India Calls for De-Escalation

India responded cautiously to the developments. Speaking at an event in Luxembourg, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed concern and urged all parties to prioritize the safety and well-being of Venezuelans. He emphasized India’s long-standing good relations with Venezuela and called for dialogue and a negotiated resolution to prevent further instability.
