US-Pakistan Defense Deal: Could Pakistan Receive Advanced Missiles from the US?

Pakistan may soon receive advanced missile systems from the United States, sparking discussions amid improving diplomatic relations between the two countries. Reports suggest that Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) could be supplied to Pakistan, potentially upgrading the capabilities of its F-16 fighter jets.

This news surfaced after the US Department of Defense announced a defense contract involving Pakistan and 35 other countries, assigning the American company Raytheon to manufacture the AIM-120C8 and D3 missile versions. The total contract value is approximately $2.5 billion, with a completion deadline set for May 30, 2030.

What Will Pakistan Receive?

While details remain unclear regarding the exact number of missiles Pakistan may obtain, experts view this as a major military upgrade for the Pakistan Air Force (PAF). The AMRAAM missile is compatible only with F-16 fighter jets, suggesting that the PAF’s existing fleet could see a significant enhancement in air-to-air combat capabilities.

Diplomatic Developments and Context

This potential deal follows several high-level diplomatic interactions:

  • Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir met with US President Donald Trump in the United States, where Trump emphasized his role in de-escalating tensions with India.

  • Pakistan Air Force Chief Zaheer Ahmed Babar also visited the US State Department in July, further strengthening military and diplomatic ties.

Experts suggest that this defense contract highlights Washington’s strategic approach to Pakistan, balancing regional security concerns while fostering cooperation in military technology.
