US Launches Operation HawkEye Against ISIS in Syria After Deadly Attack on American Troops

US Launches Operation HawkEye in Syria

Washington / Damascus , December 21, 2025

The United States on Saturday launched Operation HawkEye, a major military operation targeting the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in Syria. Under the operation, the US military carried out multiple airstrikes on ISIS strongholds, weapons depots, and operational hubs.

The strikes were conducted in retaliation for a deadly ISIS attack in Palmyra on December 13, which killed two US soldiers and a military-affiliated interpreter.

Retaliation for Deadly Palmyra Attack

The December attack was among the deadliest assaults on US forces in the region this year. The fallen personnel were later repatriated to the United States, where they were honored in a formal military ceremony.

Following the incident, President Donald Trump had warned of serious consequences for those responsible. The White House said the operation represents a decisive response aimed at deterring future attacks on US forces deployed overseas.

Trump Confirms Strikes, Signals Broader ISIS Crackdown

President Trump acknowledged the operation in a post on Truth Social, stating that the airstrikes were a direct response to the killing of American service members.

He said US forces are targeting ISIS positions across Syria, adding that despite years of conflict, Syria’s future could improve if ISIS is completely eliminated. Trump also noted that the Syrian government was informed of the operation and supports efforts to remove ISIS from the region.

Defense Secretary: “Not a War, But Retaliation”

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a strong warning following the launch of Operation HawkEye. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), he emphasized that the strikes do not signal the start of a broader war, but are a measured act of retaliation.

Hegseth said the United States, under President Trump’s leadership, will never hesitate to defend its people and warned that any group targeting Americans will be eliminated.

ISIS Fighters Killed in Initial Phase

According to the Defense Secretary, the initial phase of Operation HawkEye resulted in the killing of several ISIS fighters, with US forces continuing to target the group’s remaining networks.

The Pentagon said the operation remains focused on neutralizing ISIS leadership, dismantling weapons stockpiles, and preventing future attacks on US personnel and allies.
