Trump to Meet Canadian PM and Finnish President; Congratulates Japan’s Incoming PM Takaichi

These meetings between US President Donald Trump and key international leaders are being seen as significant for the United States’ foreign policy direction. Both Canada and Finland are close allies of the US, and Trump has repeatedly emphasized his focus on defense and trade partnerships with Japan during his tenure. These engagements reflect the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with its longtime global partners.

Trump’s upcoming schedule

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on Monday that President Trump will hold a formal meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the White House on Tuesday.

He will then convene his eighth cabinet meeting on Thursday, followed by a meeting with Finnish President Alexander Stubb later that afternoon.

Levitt stated,

“President Trump will welcome Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to the White House tomorrow. On Thursday, he will hold a cabinet meeting and then meet with Finnish President Alexander Stubb.”

“Canada is not for sale,” says PM Carney

It’s worth recalling that during a previous meeting in May, Trump and Carney had a light-hearted but tense exchange. Trump jokingly suggested that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States.

To this, Prime Minister Carney firmly replied,

“Like real estate, some places are not for sale. Canada is not for sale, and never will be.”

Trump countered, smiling,

“Time will tell. I don’t believe in ‘never.’ Sometimes things that seem impossible become possible through amicable negotiations.”

Trump congratulates Japan’s new female Prime Minister

The White House confirmed that Trump also congratulated Japan’s incoming Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who is set to become the country’s first female Prime Minister.

Levitt said,

“President Trump congratulates Japan for choosing its next leader. She is a highly respected and wise leader who will become the first female Prime Minister of our great ally, Japan.”

In a social media post, Trump praised Takaichi as a

“wise and strong-willed woman,”
and congratulated the “wonderful people of Japan.”

Takaichi’s election marks a historic moment for Japan’s political landscape, breaking gender barriers and signaling a new era of leadership in Tokyo.
