Washington, D.C. — U.S. Vice President JD Vance revealed that President Donald Trump is considering imposing tariffs on China for buying oil from Russia, following the recent heavy tariff on India for the same reason.

Vance: No Final Decision on China

In an interview, Vance was asked if the U.S. could take similar action against China after penalizing India. He stated, “President Trump is considering it, but no decision has been made yet.” Vance highlighted that the China case is more complex due to existing U.S.–China relations and the potential for broader economic repercussions.

China’s Firm Response

According to customs data, China’s imports of Russian oil surged to over $10 billion in July, the highest since March. Despite a 7.7% drop in total imports from Russia compared to 2024, Beijing firmly defended its energy trade. The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated, “It is legally valid for China to maintain normal economic, trade, and energy cooperation with all countries, including Russia. We will continue to buy oil according to our national interests.”

Tariff Blow to India

Last week, Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian oil purchases from Russia, bringing the total tariff to 50%, effective August 27. India denounced the move as unfair and unreasonable, stressing that its energy imports are driven by market needs to meet the demands of 1.4 billion people.

Geopolitical and Economic Stakes

  • India faces a sharp increase in U.S. tariffs, risking strain in bilateral trade.

  • China may become the next target, escalating tensions in U.S.–China relations.

  • Russia continues to benefit from energy exports despite Western sanctions.

The coming weeks will determine whether Washington escalates its trade measures to include China, potentially reshaping global energy and economic alliances.
