The oil spill causes deleterious effects on marine environment including marine organisms (living resources).

The places along Indian coastal areas having greater threat are: (i) Gulf of Kachchh; (ii) Mumbai; (iii) Mangalore; (iv) Kochi; (v) Visakhapatnam; (vi) Chennai; (vii) Tuticorin; (viii) Paradip; (ix) Hooghly; (x) Lakshadweep; and (xi) Port Blair.

The occurrence of majority of marine organisms are identified upto group level and data collected so far have not indicated perishing of any major group of organisms along Indian coastal water due to oil spill.
