CHENNAI, Jan. 11, 2026
Producers of Thalapathy Vijay’s anticipated final film Jana Nayagan have approached the Supreme Court after the Madras High Court imposed an interim stay on the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) issuing a U/A certificate.
The film was originally scheduled for release on January 9, 2026. On that date, a single bench of the Madras High Court directed the CBFC to grant the certificate, but a division bench later stayed the order following an appeal.
KVN Productions cited significant financial investment—reportedly around ₹500 crore—and potential losses due to the delay in their Supreme Court petition. The next hearing in the Madras High Court is scheduled for January 21, 2026.
Reports indicate the CBFC raised concerns over certain political dialogues and depictions involving the armed forces.
The delay has sparked political debate in Tamil Nadu, with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin criticizing the CBFC, while BJP leaders described the process as independent.
Disappointed fans have staged protests in some areas, including reports of damage to posters of competing films.
To compensate fans during the Pongal festival, producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu has announced a theatrical re-release of Vijay’s 2016 blockbuster Theri on January 15, 2026. The re-release also marks the film’s 10th anniversary.
Jana Nayagan is widely regarded as Vijay’s final acting project before he focuses fully on his political career with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
