Amid changing weather patterns, all eyes are now on how September 2025 will unfold across India. After August recorded above-normal rainfall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh alerts for multiple states. The forecast suggests heavy rain, thunderstorms, and even risks of floods and landslides in several regions.
How was August rainfall across India?
The month of August recorded 268.1 mm rainfall, about 5% above normal. Between June 1 and August 31, India received 743.1 mm rainfall, which is 6% higher than average.

Record rainfall in North-West India
North-West India received 265 mm rainfall in August, the highest since 2001 — a whopping 34.5% above normal. From June to August, the region recorded 614.2 mm, which is 27% higher than average. Punjab faced devastating floods as rivers overflowed, destroying thousands of hectares of farmland and forcing lakhs to flee their homes. Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir witnessed landslides, cloudbursts, and flash floods that washed away roads and bridges.
South Peninsular India breaks records
South Peninsular India also saw record rainfall with 250.6 mm in August, 31% above average, making it the third rainiest August since 2001 and the eighth wettest since 1901. Overall, the region received 607.7 mm rainfall from June to August, about 9.3% above normal.
IMD Forecast for September 2025
According to IMD, September is expected to bring 109% of long-term average rainfall (167.9 mm). Most parts of India will see normal to above-normal rainfall, except:

IMD DG Mrityunjay Mahapatra has warned that Uttarakhand may face landslides and flash floods in September. Heavy rainfall in the upper reaches of rivers could impact plains in South Haryana, Delhi, and North Rajasthan. In Chhattisgarh, heavy rainfall in the Mahanadi’s upper catchment may trigger floods.

Uttar Pradesh
UP is expected to receive above-normal rainfall in September. August already saw 2% above average rainfall — Western UP recorded 237.6 mm (+4%), while Eastern UP received 244 mm (+1%). An alert has been issued for 29 districts, with thunderstorm chances.
Rajasthan
Monsoon trough is active via Bikaner, Kota, Guna, Damoh, Sambalpur, and Puri. This may cause rainfall in Jaipur, Ajmer, Bharatpur, Kota, Bikaner, Udaipur, and Jodhpur divisions over the next few days.
Bihar
Till September 4, rain is expected in Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Vaishali, Shivhar, Samastipur, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Madhepura, Saharsa, Purnia, Katihar, Patna, Gaya, Nalanda, Bhagalpur, Banka, Jamui, Begusarai, and other districts.
Chhattisgarh
Thunderstorms and lightning possible on September 1, followed by heavy widespread rain from September 2 to 5 in North Chhattisgarh. Key districts include Kondagaon, Kanker, Raipur, Bilaspur, Korba, Jashpur, Durg, Rajnandgaon, and Raigarh.
Gujarat
Heavy to very heavy rain is expected between September 3 and 6 across several districts.
