Moscow | November 11, 2025 — Russia’s security services have claimed to foil an alleged joint Ukrainian-British espionage operation aimed at stealing a MiG-31 supersonic interceptor aircraft, in what could mark one of the boldest intelligence confrontations of the war to date.
According to state-run media outlets, Russian counterintelligence officials reportedly intercepted communications and detained several individuals accused of planning to hijack the advanced MiG-31 from a Russian air base. Authorities allege that operatives were coordinating with foreign intelligence handlers.
“The attempt to steal a MiG-31 was prevented in time. All involved persons are being interrogated. The materials of the case are classified,” a Russian Defense Ministry source told RIA Novosti.
Espionage Allegations and Classified Details
The MiG-31, one of Russia’s most sophisticated long-range interceptor jets, is capable of flying at speeds over Mach 2.8 and carries hypersonic missiles such as the Kinzhal. The aircraft’s sensitivity makes it a high-value target for intelligence agencies seeking advanced military data.
While Russian officials have accused Ukraine and the United Kingdom’s intelligence agencies of orchestrating the operation, neither Kyiv nor London has issued any immediate response. Western analysts, however, urged caution, noting that Moscow has previously used similar claims for strategic messaging during heightened conflict phases.
“If verified, this would be a remarkable breach attempt. However, without independent confirmation, these remain assertions aligned with Russia’s information warfare strategy,” said a European defense analyst.
Heightened Tensions in the Region
The claim comes amid rising drone attacks and cross-border strikes between Russian and Ukrainian forces, with both sides ramping up intelligence and counterintelligence operations. The Kremlin has warned of “retaliatory measures” should foreign agents be found complicit.
The incident also highlights growing military espionage risks surrounding advanced aircraft systems, particularly as Russia continues to deploy MiG-31s carrying hypersonic weapons in key operational zones.
International Response
NATO officials have not commented directly but reiterated their call for “responsible communication” from all parties, warning that unverified intelligence claims could inflame regional instability.
The British Defence Ministry is expected to issue a formal statement if the allegations evolve into a diplomatic dispute.
