Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) which has developed a unique 3000 acres greenbelt in and around it’s Jamnagar Refinery complex in Gujarat  plans to further add 2000 acres to be turned into afforestation green area ,

“ Reliance is committed to a responsible corporate citizenship and sustainable growth as part of its endeavor Reliance refinery in Jamnagar has covered about 3000 acres of greenbelt with more than 200 species of plants and around Three million trees , plats and shrubs This has transformed an otherwise semi-arid and bare countryside into an oasis–in-the-desert. The impact of this massive greening has resulted in lowering of temperature by around 20C and increase in annual rainfall from an earlier average of 400 mm to over 900 mm “ said Mr B Narayan, Group President, (procurement and projects) Reliance Industries Limited while speaking at a panel discussion“Sustainable Ecosystem” organised by Outokumpu India at the ongoing Three day  Oil and Gas World Expo 2018 here in Mumbai .

“Jamnagar which  typically represents the arid, subtropical areas of Saurashtra with poor rainfall and frequent droughts. The climate is hot and dry with high velocity winds. Reliance , at its Jamnagar refinery as part of its greening activity has developed Asia’s largest mango orchard encompassing about 500 acres. Trees in mango and other fruit or chards are irrigated with desalinated water not touching the water resources of local population “ sad Mr Narayan.

“Besides drip irrigation system, conservation of water is achieved by Treated effluents from the refinery are used to
irrigate timber crops such as Teak, Sawan etc, while treated sewage water is used in the Township gardens and lawns. Not only that, a systematic approach to conserve and harvest rain water is attempted to supplement needs of fresh water irrigation to eatable species. We have turned refinery into zero water waste complex ” Said Mr Narayan.

Now we are moving towards rain water harvesting by conserving rain water . RIL has invested in petcoke gasification to meet its entire fuel requirement at the refineries and eliminate its petcoke production of seven million tonnes a year, generated from two of its refineries. The technology for petcoke gasification will help RIL produce about  mscmd (million standard cubic metres a day) of syngas and will aid in reducing R-LNG intake for its refineries. Syngas is a fuel gas mixture of primarily hydrogen, carbon monoxide and, very often, some carbon dioxide. He added.

Others who spoke at the panel discussion included  Dr. Anil Kakodkar, former chairman Atomic Energy Commission, Mr RajiovMAthur MD, Mahanagar gas ,Mr. Vishal Goenka, Director Sterling Auxiliaries Ltd Mr. Claes Tigerstrand, Head , Southern Europe & OverseasTechnical Market Development & Customer Service, Outokumpu and Mr Yatinder Pal Singh Suri, Managing Director, Outokumpu India .
