Reliance Industries Ceases Russian Crude Oil Imports to Comply with EU Sanctions

Mumbai, November 21, 2025  :

The Reliance Industries Ltd  has announced the cessation of direct imports of Russian crude oil to its export-oriented refinery at Jamnagar, Gujarat. This strategic shift aims to comply promptly with the European Union’s ban on refined products stemming from Russian oil, effective January 21, 2026.

The Jamnagar complex, the world’s largest refining hub, had been a significant buyer of Russian crude following the sanctions imposed after the Ukraine conflict. Reliance Industries Ltd has honored all pre-committed Russian crude shipments up to November 12, processing existing inventory while transitioning to sourcing crude primarily from the Middle East and other regions.

This move comes in the wake of escalating geopolitical tensions and tightening sanctions targeting major Russian oil producers Rosneft and Lukoil, whose barrels constitute a major portion of India’s Russian imports. By recalibrating its procurement strategy, Reliance Industries Ltd aims to maintain compliance and mitigate risks of secondary sanctions while sustaining its sizeable export operations.

The transition at Jamnagar underscores evolving global oil trade dynamics as refiners adapt to shifting regulatory landscapes, impacting oil flows and supply chains worldwide.
