Moscow – : Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended an official proposal to mediate between Iran and Israel amid escalating hostilities. Speaking at the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin stated that Russia could facilitate a diplomatic agreement that would allow Iran to maintain its nuclear program peacefully while addressing Israel’s national security concerns.
“This is a sensitive issue,” Putin told reporters, “but I believe a solution is possible.” The Russian president emphasized Moscow’s close ties with Tehran and its involvement in Iran’s civilian nuclear energy projects as a foundation for credible mediation.
Russia Sends Peace Proposal to Iran, Israel, and the U.S.
Putin confirmed that a formal peace proposal has been dispatched to Tehran, Tel Aviv, and Washington, clarifying that Russia isn’t imposing any conditions but wants to initiate dialogue among the parties involved. “We’re not forcing anyone,” he said. “We just want to explore a path forward that could work for everyone.”
Russia’s long-standing relationships with West Asian countries place it in a unique position to mediate between the warring states. Kremlin officials believe these diplomatic connections strengthen Russia’s ability to act as a neutral facilitator, especially as the region teeters on the edge of broader conflict.
Russia’s Deep Ties with Iran’s Nuclear Program
Highlighting Russia’s historical involvement in Iran’s nuclear energy sector, Putin pointed out that Moscow had helped build Iran’s first nuclear power plant in Bushehr. He added that over 200 Russian engineers are currently working on two additional power reactors at the same site, underscoring Russia’s longstanding role in Iran’s civilian energy development.
The nuclear element has remained central to Israel’s concerns over Iran, particularly as direct missile strikes and cyberattacks have increased in frequency over the past week. Putin stressed that any resolution must include transparency and guarantees acceptable to both sides.
Trump Receives Praise, But Urged to Focus on Ukraine
Putin also offered praise for U.S. President Donald Trump, noting that Trump’s leadership could have prevented the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. He expressed support for Trump’s pledges to pursue peace in Ukraine if re-elected and reiterated Moscow’s willingness to negotiate a ceasefire.
However, Putin raised questions about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s legitimacy, stating that his term had expired in 2024 and suggesting that his authority to continue in office is in dispute. This statement comes amid rising international pressure on Moscow to de-escalate the Ukraine war.
Russia’s push for a diplomatic solution in West Asia positions the Kremlin as an active global mediator, even as tensions in Ukraine continue to dominate headlines. Moscow’s outreach to both Iran and Israel signals a strategic move to increase its influence in the region and prevent further escalation that could draw in additional global powers.
