President Gotabaya Rajapaksa hands over his signature to senior official

In Sri Lanka, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has handed over the signature of his resignation to a senior official.

This letter will be handed over to Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abhaywardene on Wednesday, July 13, after which he will make a public announcement. On the other hand, Sajith Premadasa, the head of Sri Lanka’s main opposition party Samagi Jana Balvegaya, has been made the interim President of Sri Lanka. The SJB on Monday undisputedly nominated Premdas for the post of interim President. Presidential elections in Sri Lanka are to be held on 20 July.

Before this, Gotabaya will resign on July 13 and the session of Parliament will be called on July 15.

A large number of people were injured in clashes with security forces as protesters entered Rashtrapati Bhavan. Police fired tear gas, water cannons and fired shots into the air to stop and disperse the protesters. Police on Saturday lifted a curfew ahead of anti-government protests in Sri Lanka, following mounting pressure from top lawyers’ union, human rights groups and political parties. This curfew was imposed in seven divisions in the western province of the country including Colombo to prevent anti-government demonstrations. Curfew was imposed in seven police divisions in the western province including Negombo, Kelaniya, Nugegoda, Mount Lavinia, North Colombo, South Colombo and Colombo Central.
