Pranab Mukherjee inaugurates two branches of PNB in West Bengal

  • Hon’ble Finance Minister, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, inaugurated two new branches of Punjab National Bank in the State on 27th of December, 2010. While one branch is in the District of  Murshidabad at Devkunda,   the other lies in Coochbehar in the presence of Sh. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, MP, Sh. M.V. Tanksale, ED, PNB and other esteemed dignitaries. Thus PNB has established presence in all the 19 districts of the State.
  • The inaugural function was attended by more than 5000 persons. Nearly 2100 accounts were opened by the new branches. Around 200 persons were extended finance on the same day. Towards building bonds with the immediate society, the Bank presented tricycles to the disabled persons and distributed blankets to people from underprivileged sections under its CSR umbrella.
  • West Bengal, known for its rich culture, heritage, natural beauty and industry, is often described as a ‘Gateway State’ due to its geographical location, making it a gateway to the entire Asia Pacific belt. A land of many social reformers like Subhash Chandra Bose, Ravindra Nath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo, it is the third largest contributor to India’s GDP.
  • PNB’s association with the State dates back to 1926 when the Bank was drawn into a controversy over its admission to the Clearing House of Calcutta, then dominated by British business and British banks. The Bank was admitted into the Clearing House of Calcutta w.e.f. Feb 22, 1926. Since then, the bonds have further strengthened with PNB having 241 branches as on date in the State.
  • Total Business of PNB in the State registered a y-o-y growth of more than 21% as at mid-December, 2010 to reach a business of more than Rs 27,000 crore. West Bengal state contributes around 4% share of the total business of the Bank. While advances of PNB rose by more than 25%, Deposits showed a y-o-y growth of more than 20%.
  • To provide “Any Where Any Time” Banking service, the Bank has 115 ATMs in West Bengal, besides providing free Internet Banking.
